The Giants finally released the full list of names, with job titles, in the nick of time before the opening of camp today. Sorted by job types,
le gros fromages:
• Tony Vitello, the spicy new manager, is now familiar to us all.
• Jayce Tingler, bench coach
Tingler and Vitello were teammates at Missouri, back in the day. Tingler managed the Padres in ’20 and ’21, and was bench coach in Minnesota the last two seasons. His MLB experience and long relationship with Vitello means Tingler brings a lot to the plate.
le lancers:
• Justin Meccage, pitching coach
• Christian Wonders, assistant pitching coach
• Jesse Chavez, bullpen coach
• Frank Anderson, director of ML pitching
Meccage, pronounced message, had a low tier minor league career before changing over to coaching. He worked his way up through the Pirates organization, reaching the majors from ’18 to ’24. He spent last year at AAA with the Brewers, sending several pitchers including Jacob Misiorowski up to the MLB team. Meccage is considered a ‘gripmeister’. This seems a wonderful choice.
Chavez just ended his MLB career in 2025, having been traded a record 11 times as he pitched relief for 16 different teams (counting the Braves 4 times). He steps directly into a MLB coaching job.
Wonders has been an assistant pitching coach with the Padres and Rays, while Anderson comes from UT. I’ve no idea what his job title means, but did find an article saying his department includes the other three guys!
le batteurs:
• Hunter Mense, hitting coach
• Oscar Benard, assistant hitting coach (holdover from BoMel)
Mense left the Blue Jays organization, who used a high batting average theory to get themselves into the World Series. And he has Arraez around to show the rest of the team the value of getting on base. Are the Giants finally going to score some runs? This is exciting!
le professeurs:
• Ron Washington, infield coach
• Shane Robinson, first base coach
• Hector Borg, third base coach
• Taira Uematsu, quality control coach (holdover from BoMel)
• Quentin Eberhardt, strength coach, comes over from UT
We all know exactly who Ron Washington is! Robinson was a MLB outfielder from ’09 to ’18, with four different teams. He coached in the minors for the Mets and Padres before joining the Giants last season, as minor league instructor in outfield and base running. Both topics seemingly were ignored the last two years.
Borg is also an internal promotion, and a Giants’ lifer. After four years in the minors, Borg switched into coaching in 2008, and finally makes it to the majors. Welcome, at long last, to the Black and Orange!
le receveurs:
• Alex Burg, catching coach and field coordinator (holdover from BoMel)
• Eliezer Zambrano, bullpen catcher (holdover from BoMel)
Zambrano has also been with the Giants his entire career, playing at age 19 in the Dominican Summer League. He earned the sobriquet ‘the original Squirrel’ for playing in Richmond all first 8 years of their existence, reaching the River Cats for 4 games in 2017 at age 30.
The catching coaching seems solid, with their first task being to select the back up catcher for 2026 from three possibilities.
The Giants coaching page lists Zambrano, but only as ‘staff’ rather than as one of the ‘coaches’. Eberhardt isn’t listed at all, but definitely came over to the Giants from UT. Another new name is Mike Marjama, another former catcher who joins the Little Giants as their hitting coach.
This feels like a solid staff, over all much younger, but with a good blend of MLB experience in both the Giants and other organizations. I’m pumped about a bat-on-the-baseball hitting coach, so Hunter Mense gets the Picture of the Post today.
More news later this week, as stories come in slowly. First game doesn’t come until the 21st!
