Patrick Bailey

Last summer, the Yankees traded Jesus Rodriguez (along with Trystan Vrieling, Parks Harbor, and Carlos de la Rosa) for Camilo Doval.  He was their international signing back in 2018, got a roster spot in 2024 so as to not lose him in Rule Five, and reached AAA last year.  He hits well, 180 for 561 (0.321) in combined AAA play for both teams, with power still developing.  He can also play 2B and OF, and was 5-15 (0.333) in his first 5 games as a Giant.

Last fall, the Athletics decided to retain Austin Wynns on their 40-man, as the backup for Shea Langeliers.  That left Daniel Susac and his first round signing bonus of $3.5M unprotected in the Rule Five draft.  Brilliant of the A’s, who had to release Wynns this week.  In what must have been a prearranged sequence, the Twins selected him, and immediately flipped him to the Giants for pitching prospect Miguel Carabello.  Susac is on rehab at present, with ulnar neuritis, and hit two homers on his first rehab game.  His numbers in MLB so far are unsustainable: 11 for 23 (0.476) with a walk, two doubles, and a homer, in 11 games.  As you know, Daniel’s brother Andrew was a Giant a while back.

The very short MLB time for Rodriguez and Susac convinced Buster Posey it was time to pull the trigger on a trade of Patrick Bailey.  His idea is to get more run scoring, but the team loses a good defensive catcher and great pitch caller.  I’m sure Logan Webb was as surprised as us, to see his buddy leave.  Bailey has had some great moments as a Giant, including a walk off around the park home run against the Phillies, and a walk-off grand slam against the dodgers.  Both came in 2025, and no one else has ever done that in a single season.  Fare well, Patrick, the Guardians and Steven Vogt will value you.

The Giants get a 29th draft pick later this summer (in addition to their 4th pick) and AA pitcher Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson in return.  Prior to the return of Susac from the IL, they activated Logan Porter on Saturday, to join Eric Haase and Rodriguez as a 3-catcher assemblage.  That sends a strong signal Eric Haase will remain when Susac returns (as early as the first game below?), since Rodriguez has been picking up some OF playing time.

Here’s the first series of the road trip:
• Monday, 7:10, Trevor McDonald (1-0, 1.29) vs. RHP Roki Sasaki (1-3, 5.97)
• Tuesday, 7:10, Adrian Houser (0-4, 6.19) vs. RHP Yoshinobu Yomama (3-2, 3.09)
• Wednesday, 7:10, Robbie Ray (3-4, 2.76) vs. RHP Shohei Outani (2-2, 0.97)
• Thursday, 7:10, Landen Roupp (5-3, 3.09) vs. Emmet Sheehan (2-1, 4.79)
and then our team is off to play the Sacramento Athletics.
