The 20-27 Giants will conclude their road trip in Phoenix, against the 22-23 Snakes. The series details are as follows:
• Monday, 6:40, Robbie Ray (3-5, 3.04) vs. RHP Zac Gallen (1-4, 5.02)
• Tuesday, 6:40, Landen Roupp (5-4, 3.49) vs. RHP Ryne Nelson (1-3, 5.40)
• Wednesday, 12:40, Tyler Mahle (1-5, 5.59) vs. RHP Merrill Kelly (3-3, 5.91)
This is the first meeting against Arizona this year, with a return visit next week. The Giants will finally have an off-day come Thursday.
The Giants have managed to crawl out of the cellar on this trip, 4-3 so far. But at 10 games under 0.500, they need to start sweeping somebody. The Diamondbacks would be a very good choice of teams to do that too, as that would put the Giants past them, and into third place in the division. And if our team can sweep, we might even find the energy for an official off-day post?
Here are the 2026 Snakes, mostly familiar faces:
🐍 1B Ildemaro Vargas (31, 7 HR), 2B Ketel Marte (15), SS Geraldo Perdomo (12), 3B Nolan Arenado (21)
🌵 RF Corbin Carroll (24, 7 HR), CF Ryan Waldschmidt (5), LF Lourdes Gurriel (9)
🏜 C Gabriel Moreno (12), DH Adrian Del Castillo (16)
🐍 bench: C James McCann, IF Jose Fernandez, IF/OF Tim Tawa, OF Jorge Barrosa
🌵 rotation: Michael Soroka (6-2, 3.49), Gallen, Nelson, Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez (4-1, 2.53)
🏜 closer Paul Sewald, set ups Juan Morillo and Taylor Clarke
No former Giants on the active roster. We will postpone looking at their winter moves until next week, in order to have a bit more space to look at our own guys.
Were there signs of life in Oakland? Firstly, the big money contracts: Matt Chapman got 0, 1, 2 hits in the three games, including 2 doubles, perhaps a quickening pulse. Rafi Devers went 3-13 with 2 walks, 1 RBI, 2 runs. Willy Adames was cream of that crop: 6-14, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored.
Casey Schmitt only got a pinch-hit in the first game, so he went off in the second with a 4-5, the first two homers from the 3rd spot in the batting order, and 3 RBI. He added a 2-5 with a run scored in the final game of the series. Harrison Bader went 3-13 in the series, but two of the hits were homers, including the first grand slam by any Giant this year. 3 runs scored, 5 RBI, and interestingly, was moved to the lead off spot for the final game. He made two good catches in the final game, including one the team thought worth posting: https://www.mlb.com/giants/video/sam-hentges-in-play-out-s-to-darell-hernaiz?t=t137-default-vtp Both very solid contenders for Picture of the Post!
But, Luis Arraez said “hold my beer!” to that. He was 8 for 12 with his first 2 homers of the year, 3 walks, and scored 5 times. Some great defense, including one the Giants put in their video highlights: https://www.mlb.com/giants/video/tyler-soderstrom-grounds-out-second-baseman-luis-arraez-to-first-baseman?t=t137-default-vtp He leads the Giants with a 0.328 batting average, 30 points clear of Schmitt. 9 doubles, 2 triples, and now 2 homers. Just 7 strike outs. You also have to admire the work he put in with Ron Washington to become a stellar 2B, hence his Picture of the Post shows him with a glove, not his contact-happy bat.
In other news, Heliot Ramos hurt his quad, Will Brennan was called up but disappeared into the Bermuda Triangle down at the end of Vitello’s bench, Bryce Eldridge rode the pine two times, Daniel Susac and Erik Miller returned from injuries, and Christian Koss and Tristan Beck were optioned out.
