Much of the information in this off-day post comes from Maria Guardado’s “injuries and transactions” page, but with some looking up of some extra stuff.
players
Grant McCray, minor league IL, broken hamate, operation was just a week ago Thursday, so he’ll be out about 60 days, into August
Christian Koss, minor league IL, broken wrist on May 23, will see doctor again around June 20, they are talking about a return in “July”.
Heliot Ramos, 10-day IL, quad strain, he’s taken some BP, possible return in June, but he is not out on rehab
Harrison Bader, 10-day IL, plantar fasciitis, in walking boot, got a stem cell injection on June 5, eligible to return June 10, but he doesn’t seem to be out on rehab
Jared Oliva, 60-day IL, hamate, went on rehab May 30, eligible to return June 15. 8 for 29 o his rehab so far, with 3 doubles.
Did Jonah Cox pip Jared Oliva out of a job? Note that Casey Schmitt plus all three young outfielders gave the team the confidence to release Will Brennan on Wednesday, when they needed a 40-man spot. And with the release of Brennan, the only healthy player in the minors is Jesus Rodriguez. The only other position players are Koss and McCray. Does the front office see how thin this is?
pitchers
Gregory Santos, minor league IL, adductor strain, return around end of June
Matt Gage (L), 15-day IL, knee inflammation, eligible to return June 17, threw a bullpen on June 9.
Tyler Mahle, 15-day IL, hamstring strain, throwing again, eligible to return June 12
Jason Foley, 60-day list, shoulder surgery, went on rehab May 12. As he neared a month on rehab, the maximum allowed, the Giants declared Foley’s shoulder was fatigued, which will let them restart the rehab period this weekend. Foley has appeared 8 times for 8.2 IP, 8 hits, 1 BB, 2 ER. Eligible to return whenever he is ready.
Joel Peguero, 60-day IL, hamstring pull, eligible to return September 1
Jose Butto, Hayden Birdsong, Randy Rodriguez, and Rowan Wick are all on 60-day list and will miss all of the remaining season.
healthy pitchers on the 40-man in the minors:
Tristan Beck, Spencer Bivens, Wilkin Ramos, Blade Tidwell, Ryan Walker, Carson Whisenhunt
toss in the name Jason Foley, and you’d have to think some bullpen help is near at hand.
Reiver Sanmartin (L) had been on the 60-day IL, hip flexor, going out on rehab May 19, activated on Wednesday. That injury occurred as he was scheduled to pitch for Columbia in the WBC. He appeared 7 times for the River Cats on rehab: 6 IP, 9 hits, 2 BB, 7 ER. Sanmartin got the W in the “Bryce Eldridge game” on Wednesday, pitching the final two innings, yielding one run on a homer, one other hit, no walks. No walks is something the rest of the pen needs to contemplate. Let’s make Sanmartin Picture of the Post, so Bryce Eldridge can have that high honor and acclaim for the entire Cubs series. Also, fellow heroes Matt Chapman and Jung Hoo Lee are very recent winners.
