The Giants carried 17 players and 23 pitchers on their 40-man coming out of last year’s Winter Meetings. Taking that same partition, we had hypothesized that the 17 position players still around in early November might be:
• IF (7): Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, Rafael Devers, Bryce Eldridge, Christian Koss, Casey Schmitt with reserve Marcelo Mayer
• C (3): Drew Cavanaugh, Daniel Susac with reserve Jesus Rodriguez
• OF (7): Victor Bericoto, Jonah Cox, Bo Davidson, Drew Gilbert, Jung Hoo Lee with reserves Scott Bandura and Turner Hill
Assumptions behind that were a) no one can anticipate trades, so all names are currently in the Giants organization and b) it would be impolite to list who you leave out. To do the same with the pitchers, first count them up: 14 active, 3 assigned to the now idle teams in the minors but healthy, 4 on the 15-day list, and 10 on the 60-day list. That’s 31, which sounds like a lot more than 23, to be exact, 8.
One name is easy, JT Brubaker is automatically subtracted, as he becomes a free agent. Next, it turns out that if you look up relievers who had 8+ appearances and a WHIP greater than the immortal Ryan Borucki (1.52 WHIP in his 21 appearances), you find 6 names. So, just one more. Next, there are two guys with only 3 relief appearances who were worse than the Borucki WHIP, and I’ve chosen the one with hardly any MLB time, as possibly able to improve next year. Now all that remains to do is type these 23:
• starters (9): Adrian Houser, Seth Lonsway (L), Yunior Marte (L), Miguel Mendez, Anthony Molina, Cesar Perdomo (L), Landen Roupp, Logan Webb, Matt Wilkinson (L)
• relievers (10): Tristan Beck, Duncan Davitt, Trent Harris, Joel Peguero, Randy Rodriguez, Braxton Roxby, Reiver Sanmartin (L), Dylan Smith, Rowan Wick, Keaton WInn
• TJ (4): Hayden Birdsong, Trevor McDonald, Blade Tidwell, Carson Whisenhunt (L)
Italics show two pitchers who were out all of 2026 recovering from elbow surgery. Over the winter, the Giants will need to put the four pitchers who will not pitch in 2027 on the 40-man list, but they will go onto the 60-day list again as soon as camp opens. Actually, Birdsong had his surgery in March 2026, so he might be able to pitch some in the second half of 2027.
This list is a roster for right after the “60-day list massacre”. 5 days after the World Series. The Giants might choose to squeeze more names into the 23, prior to the Rule 5 draft a few weeks later. It looks like the R5 vulnerable pitchers include AAA Joe Whitman, AA Henry Lalane and Marty Gair, A+ Luis De La Torre, A Keyner Martinez.
