The Giants fall to 47-65, dropping the Padres series 1-3, winning only Ray’s start in the first game. This matches their season low at 18 under 0.500. The trading deadline is 3 PM tomorrow, with everyone asking, is there going to be a way out of the bog? So far, no rumors or leaks have been reported.
The Giants are flying to Texas as this is being typed, to play three:
• Monday, 5:05, ESPN, Logan Webb (6-7, 3.93) vs. TBD
• Tuesday, 5:05, TBD against TBD
• Wednesday, 11:35, TBD against TBD
Well, if you are simply counting ahead, the other two pitchers for SF would be Ray and Whisenhunt – but who knows what the roster will be by then. The Rangers are 55-56, and just got swept by the Astros, who surged past them into first place in the AL West, at 58-55.
Somebody has got to be Picture of the Post, so why not Osleivis Basabe, who homered for his first Giants hit, and then hit a bases loaded double to tie the 3rd game, off no less than Mason Miller, who got a BS for the first time in almost a year. Sayeth Sarah Langs, about the double:
Osleivis Basabe! Double off 102.9 mph. That’s the fastest pitch a Giants player has gotten a base hit off of under pitch tracking (2008) and tied for the 4th-fastest pitch hit by anyone for an extra-base hit in span, including playoffs.
He followed this up with a homer that Jackson Merrill could not quite bring back onto the field, in the 4th game. However, his play at 3B fell short of the standards set by Schmitt and Chapman. In 9 minor league seasons, Basabe has 135 games at 3B, 311 at SS, and 167 at 2B, and his arm may be better suited to playing 2B if Luis Arraez is traded, with Christian Koss taking over at 3B. We will see. Matt Chapman is headed towards another MRI to see why he can’t run the bases, and Buddy Kennedy has been claimed off Seattle waivers, as the Giants try to piece together an infield.
One last thing, in lieu of any trade news. You may not follow soccer very closely, but won’t be shocked if I opine that FIFA is as corrupt as the IOC, which of course really takes some doing. Its head, Gianni Infantino, concocted a fake peace medal made of gold to present to Trump, and later took a phone call from Trump to make a red card on the USA side disappear. FIFA’s New York offices, in an utterly amazing coincidence, happen to be in Trump Tower. You might have heard about FIFA’s new scandal, in which Infantino tried to sell off 20% of future profits in the World Cup for cash now. This appears to be halted now, after objections from Europe’s soccer league, with a whole spate of Infantino’s underlings claiming to have known nothing about it. It turns out that this deal was being made with a “private investment firm” called Thrive Eternal, a shell company owned by Thrive Capital, which in turn is owned by Josuah Kushner. Imagine that, more Trump-adjacent corruption. Kushner and Thrive Capital bought into the Giants ownership group this past April – no one seems to have reported the amount, but it is called “minority non-controlling stake” by Forbes, who says the Giants generated $477M in revenue in 2025, and are worth about $4 billion. The good news is that Kushner’s attempt to buy into FIFA appears to be quashed, and quite possibly, Gianni Infantino’s time will end soon.
