Yesterday, kodachrome sent me a list of the top 30 prospects in the Giants organization from Baseball America, whose lists are well respected. Overall, BA ranks the Giants as the 4th best farm system, now that we are post draft and post trading deadline. The top 5 in their listing (see numbers below) are in their 100 best players in any organization.
These lists always seem a bit odd to me, with a notable preference for recently signed or drafted players, over those who are much closer to the big leagues. For example, the #1 and #2 players on the BA list are currently in San Jose, to be sure are doing very well there, but we all know it takes years to get from SJ to SF! So, let’s sort the BA list a bit, by who is closest to actually helping the Giants. Everybody detailed below has moved up this season, which is a sure sign the Giants agree with BA about these players. All stats are from their new higher level:

Christian Koss is one of my favorite players! He has his head in the game (smart guy who reads books), plays multiple positions, does anything his manager asks, and always has a dirty uniform. He was denied steady playing time until Casey Schmitt went on the IL on 7/28. After becoming the regular third basemen, he is 10-47(0.213) and drove a ball in the 9th inning to the warning track in an attempt to tie up that awful Wednesday game. RBI double in the 2nd game. You know who the Rockies are, so no team preview. This is the 4th and final meeting of the two teams who have fought all season for divisional last place. The Rockies come in at 48-73, Giants are 50-71, so this is the decisive series!
