The Giants beat Matthews and Pallante last week, but didn’t see Liberatore. That TBD counts out to Anthony Molina, but instead we might see Yunior Marte take that start? The last road trip of the season is split up by an off-day Thursday, then on to The Latrine.
The sweep of the Cardinals and the sweep by the Padres puts the Giants at 62-88, still mathematically capable of equaling their worst season ever.
Rafael Devers has played 1B only infrequently in August, and now we know why – he has been nursing a “core muscle injury” this season, and is in Philadelphia to see a sports surgeon. Thus, his season ends on 36 doubles, 37 homers, and 98 RBI, after hitting a grand slam and a 2 run homer in the Padres series. He had 144 total hits, for an average of 0.258. It is a shame we can’t cheer for him to reach the 40, 40, and 100 marks.
There are now 16 players on the 60-day injured list, so expect a total massacre of the current active roster when the off-season starts, when most of the 16 claim a 40-man spot.
The Picture of the Post is Spencer Bivens, waived this week and thus an ex-Giant. He has a fantastic story, pitching in small colleges, then Europe, then independent leagues, until finally the Giants noticed him, in 2022. He had a strong camp in 2024, and gained a promotion to the club in June. Bivens would appear 85 times for the Giants, putting up an ERA of 4.08 and a 7-4 record, in 134 innings. He’s just 32, but didn’t do well in two cups of coffee this season. Spencer Bivens is now a Kansas City Royal, or to be specific, an Omaha Storm Chaser. Farewell, Spencer, maybe grow the dreadlocks back?
