Guardians

Guardians

Firstly, here’s the schedule for the series,
   • Tuesday,3:40, Carson Whisenhunt (3-3, 6.11) vs. LHP Foster Griffin (12-3, 3.06)
   • Wednesday, 3:40, TBD vs. LHP Parker Messick (9-7, 2.59)
   • Thursday, 10:10 👀, Landen Roupp (7-12, 4.31) vs. RHP Gavin Williams (11-7, 3.74)
Presumably the pitcher on Wednesday is LHP Matt Wilkinson, who was the return when the Giants traded Patrick Bailey to the Guardians earlier in the season.  It is being announced on Monday that “Tugboat” will get a call up from AAA.  Simple counting in the rotation would predict it to be Adrian Houser, whose last start was really good.  We will see!  There are also rumors circulating about the activation of 2B Marcelo Mayer, obtained in the recent Erik Miller to Boston trade.  Both the 51-73 Giants and the 60-65 Guardians have Monday off.  The Giants head to Boston after Cleveland.

Next, let’s go over the Guardians players, for 3rd year manager Stephen Vogt,
   🗿 1B Nathaniel Lowe (8), 2B Angel Genao (3), SS Brayan Rocchio (51), 3B Jose Ramirez (38)
🗿 RF Chase DeLauter (57), CF Steven Kwan (23) ,LF Jo Adell (5)
   🗿 C Patrick Bailey (19), DH Travis Bazzana (36)
🗿 bench C Austin Hedges, 1B Rhys Hoskins (38), OF Petey Halpin, OF/IF Angel Martinez (43)
🗿 rotation Messick, Williams, Joey Cantilio (9-7, 3.80), Tanner Bibee (4-13, 4.01), Griffin
🗿 closer Cade Smith, set ups Hunter Gaddis and Colin Holderman
Bailey’s BA with Cleveland after the trade is 0.202.  Former C Bo Naylor was part of their only deadline trade, and Naylor now with the Brewers AAA franchise. That trade seems to be a statement that Bailey is the #1 C in Cleveland.

A bit on the two potential Giant call ups!  Tugboat is from Vancouver, and was nicknamed that by one of his Dad’s friends who saw him running the bases in a Little League World Series.  He’s apparently been as heavy as 270 lbs, but is playing now at 250.  Said to have a very well hidden baseball during deliveries.  2B Marcelo Mayer was a highly considered draft pick for the Red Sox, and has played two seasons with them.  Many injuries, and clearly the Sox gave up on him, trading him August 3rd for Erik Miller.  If we regard this as just a flyer by the Giants, hoping he returns to his form, then calling him up and getting him playing time is a good idea.  Mayer has gone 5-14 (0.357) in 5 rehab games for the Cats, a double and a homer, so why not activate him for Tuesday’s game?

The Giants dropped the series against the Rockies, 1-2, and the season series 6-7.  This leaves them just one game ahead of the Rockies, as both teams fight tooth and nail for bottom dwelling honors.  Rookie call up Turner Hill hit a sac fly to break a 1-1 tie in the only game the Giants won this past weekend, which was followed by a two RBI single by Drew Gilbert.  He was pretty much the best player in the only win, so let’s dive Drew the Picture of the Post.  The two scheduled lefty starters in Cleveland make it likely we’ll get a longer look at Jonah Cox and Victor Bericoto this week.
